International Pop Overthrow at The Troubador

Hollywood - July 25, 1999

[John's Local Band Pix]

This was the first international band I saw at the International Pop Overthrow and they were the dope. They played a tight set, with extremely high energy (this was becoming a trend by now), and the crowd was very responsive. Their style is power pop (a little bit like Squeeze or Smithereens), and they played a tight set. I was particularly amused by the parallel guitar solo stuff (both guitarists playing the same solo offset by a third or something), which was they did several times very precisely.

They played a longer set than most of the bands, but I didn't mind. I can see some of the other bands next week, and most of them will likely be back to LA before this band. For the last number, Ron Flynt came up and joined them onstage. He looked familiar, but I couldn't remember who he was. I asked a friend who it was after the show and she told me who Ron Flynt was (the main guy from 20/20) in a somewhat condescending tone. I felt even more like a dufus, as I was actually into 20/20 and saw them a couple of times in the early 80's. Oh well, I guess I'm the clueless newbie of the LA Music Scene. :-)

My brother in law commented that we may have been giving them too much credit. It may be that our expectations were lowered because of it being a non US band, and so when they were "pretty good" and we perceived it as being "really good". I liked them enough to buy their CD, and so far I like it. I'm not singing along yet, but the lead vocalist's accent means that I'm not picking up on lyrics as quickly. Another play or two and I'm sure I'll at least know the hooks. Anyway, they play again on Saturday (July 31) at Eastgate Park, so I recommend you check them out.
